Always brush teeth in short, back and forth strokes for a few seconds, moving on to the next tooth. They should be brushed one at a time.

Start at the top, back molar by the wisdom teeth. Hold the brush at a 45° angle with the gum line on the outer side of the teeth (the brush will be between the teeth and the cheek). The aim is to have the edge of the bristles (lengthwise) touching the gum line. Brush for a few seconds moving to the next tooth until the other side of the mouth is reached.

When the last tooth on the other side of the mouth is reached, keep the brush on the same area, move it down a little beneath the gum line to brush the surface of the teeth below the gum line. Brush until the other side of the mouth is reached once again.

Move to the biting surface of the teeth; hold the brush parallel to the biting surface. Start at the last molar and brush in the same manner until you reach the molar on the other side of the mouth.

Position the brush on the inside of the molars, holding the brush at an angle to reach the gum line, starting again on the last molar. Brush until the other side of the mouth is reached. Then move the brush down a little beneath the gum line to brush the surface below the gum line. Brush until the other side of the mouth is reached.

Perform the same steps on the lower teeth.

This may seem like a lengthy process but it isn’t. It should take between 2 -3 minutes and after awhile this process will become second nature. Teeth should not be brushed in a rushed manner nor should they be brushed too hard. It is best to use a soft or medium brush and flossing should be done at least once a day.
